Juno is pleased to welcome John-David (JD) O’Neil as our newest Instrumentation Engineer-In-Training.
JD’s background challenges the perception of engineers as predominantly left-brained professionals focused purely on technical pursuits. Before earning his Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Calgary this spring, JD completed a liberal arts degree at Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College in Barry’s Bay, Ontario. Embracing the philosophy that “an unexamined life is not worth living,” he credits his time studying history and literature with having shaped his worldview and his understanding of his place within it.
JD’s unique blend of liberal arts and engineering education allows him to recognize the synergies and interdependencies between engineering and art. He finds value in drawing connections between the humanities, the sciences, and the broader STEM field, and he looks forward to bringing this interdisciplinary perspective to his work at Juno. With a major in mechanical engineering and a minor in mechatronics, JD offers a multi-disciplinary skill set that connects mechanical systems, electrical circuits, and software controls.
Describing JD as “multi-disciplinary” is fitting, and not just because of his educational and professional background. Born in Calgary and raised in the heart of Rocky View County, JD’s early years were shaped by life in the countryside. From caring for animals to hauling hay, he learned the value of hard work and the importance of both place and family.
Outside of work, JD channels his creative energy into filmmaking. During the pandemic, he produced a 35-minute short film that received positive feedback and local recognition. An avid reader, JD and his wife enjoy spending their free time in their well-stocked home library, filled with works on history, literature, philosophy, and theology (and more than a few volumes of Tolkien!)
When asked why he chose the company, JD explains that the solid team at Juno just felt like a perfect fit. He was intent of finding a role within Instrumentation, Controls and Automation, and he’s very happy to be staying in Calgary. As he looks ahead in his career, JD is excited about developing his skills in client relations and getting to be at the service of others, within an industry that he loves.
We here at Juno were especially drawn to JD’s strong work ethic, interpersonal values, and his evident willingness and excitement to learn. These qualities resonate deeply with Juno’s commitment to fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented environment. It’s these traits that made JD a natural fit for our team, and we’re confident they will contribute to our continued success and culture of excellence.
